Green Buses
(From Bill J. in Amarillo, Texas)
As a military brat in Ramstein, Germany, we had the privilege of visiting some historial sites throughout Europe.
One spring, the green army buses (KTOWN) were loaded up for a trip to Verdun in France to look at some WWI battle sites and the American Cemetery. The added benefit of seeing those places will always be with me.
But, once humorous incident comes to mind about that trip. The green buses (I think there were 3 or 4) stopped at the border crossing for a "potty break" as well as passport verification. Twenty minutes or so later, we were loaded up and ready to proceed. All of a sudden, several gendarmes came running to stop the buses.
We not not allowed to proceed until certain parties released stolen goods back to the rightful owners. Several students went into the local "gasthaus" (German for pub), and pocketed every ashtray in the joint. It seems they wanted some souvenirs. After a few minutes, the ashtrays were found, and we were on our way.
